Exercise that improve immunity?

06/12/2020

You know how to protect yourself against the novel coronavirus by now-frequent handwashing, social distancing, and, to an extent, maintaining a balanced diet to keep your body as healthy as possible.

But another important aspect of supporting your overall health can also come in handy right now to boost your immune system: regular exercise.

  1. Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.
  2. The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from growing. This temperature rise may help the body fight infection better. (This is similar to what happens when you have a fever.)
  3. According to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), healthy adults should aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week - which can include activities like walking, yoga, or gardening.
  4. It is also said that your workout does not have to be that strenuous to trigger the immune response, so almost any exercise activity that you do for about 15 minutes at minimum per day can help.
  5. Moderate exercise also has an abundance of other health benefits, like controlling hypertension and diabetes, preventing Alzheimer's, reducing anxiety and stress, and slowing the aging process.
  6. Exercise is beneficial to immune system function in many ways. One is that it helps lower your white blood cells. This is important because a high white blood cell count is associated with inflammation. It could also signify that a health condition is present, such as coronary heart disease. Research reveals that engaging in regular exercise also helps protect the immune system from aging.
